Hartcliffe Nursery School: Community-Focused Early Years Education in Bristol

Butterflies and Squirrels Groups Welcome Local Police Officers for Educational Visit

Children in the Butterflies and Squirrels classes at Hartcliffe Nursery School recently enjoyed an exciting visit from two local police officers, bringing the community directly into this Bristol early years setting.

This community visit forms part of the nursery’s early years curriculum, which helps young children learn about different people and jobs in their local Bristol community. The early years practitioners at Hartcliffe Nursery School understand how naturally curious 2-4 year olds are about the world around them and the people they see in their neighbourhood.

During the visit, the police officers talked with the children about staying safe and explained how police help people. The early years team supported simple conversations about what police do and how they are there to help when someone is lost or needs assistance.

This hands-on approach to early years learning proved very engaging for the young children, sparking lots of questions and interest. The Bristol nursery’s approach of bringing real people into the classroom helps children understand their local community in an age-appropriate way.

The visit gave the children opportunities to share what they already knew and ask simple questions, supporting their development whilst helping them learn about their Bristol community. This type of community-focused early years provision shows Hartcliffe Nursery School’s commitment to providing meaningful experiences for children aged 2-4 that connect their learning to the real world around them.
