Building, Creating and Exploring at The Limes Nursery School

Nov 28, 2025

The Limes Nursery School children have been engaging in construction projects, creative storytelling and mathematical exploration this month.

Willow Room children showed an interest in building bridges with blocks and large loose parts, which was expanded by bringing in different construction materials and sharing photos of a variety of bridges. This exploration helped children understand structural concepts and design whilst connecting their play to real-world engineering. The children also explored making their own books, with children thrilled to fill the different pages whilst older children started developing a narrative to their drawings, showing emerging storytelling skills. These stories were then performed as part of the weekly Helicopter Stories session, bringing children’s written ideas to life through drama and collaborative performance.

Willow Room children have also shown an interest in obstacle courses, leading to a challenge of building an obstacle course for their bikes using big blocks. This physical challenge developed gross motor skills, spatial awareness and problem-solving as children navigated the course whilst building confidence in their physical abilities.

Green Room has been exploring capacity this week, following an interest in children’s cups of milk. The children have been really enjoying pouring, filling and emptying cups with coloured water, exploring the concepts of “full,” “empty” and “nearly full” whilst discovering all things water. This hands-on mathematical exploration helps children understand volume and capacity through playful experimentation.

The Limes Nursery School continues to follow children’s interests and provide rich learning experiences that support their development across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
