January Learning: Traditional Tales and Independence at Little Hayes Nursery School

Jan 23, 2026

Little Hayes Nursery School children are exploring traditional tales, developing independence and learning about patterns and mathematics this month.

Both Oak Room and Willow Room are introducing mathematical resources to explore pattern, shape and size, learning vocabulary of size (small, medium, large), height (short, tall, taller, tallest) and the numbers 1, 2, 3. Children continue to learn outdoors in all weathers, encouraged to be independent by changing their shoes and putting on their own coats using the coat flip method. Both rooms are also exploring creative ways to use boxes, junk materials and found items to support storytelling, construction and imaginative play.

Oak Room’s core book is “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” whilst Willow Room is exploring “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” Children in both rooms are using props and story maps to retell their traditional tales, creating different voices for characters and learning about characters, settings, problems and solutions through Tales Toolkit sessions. Oak Room will be making porridge at snack time and finding out how many children like it using a tally chart.

Children are also exploring playdough, clay and other malleable materials, building up strength in their hands whilst developing the fine motor movements needed for holding a pencil or using scissors.
