Little Acorns and Acorns at Filton Avenue Nursery School went on a walk in the local area this month, exploring their community and developing their understanding of the world around them.
Children talked about road safety, learning important skills about crossing roads and staying safe whilst out and about. The children noticed many things along the way, making personal connections such as “that’s nanny’s house” and spotting a cat in a garden. They watched builders laying a path, observing real work happening in their neighbourhood and understanding how their environment is built and maintained. Children also saw two trains, which excited them and sparked conversations about transport and how people travel.
These local walks help children develop their observational skills, build connections between home and nursery, and understand their place in the wider community whilst practising important safety skills. Exploring the local area provides wonderful opportunities for children to apply their learning in real-world contexts and develop confidence in navigating their community.
