Speedwell Nursery School have been focusing on two rich areas of early years learning this term, offering children opportunities to develop their understanding of numeracy as well as their confidence in storytelling and shared reading experiences.
In Owl Room, the team have been supporting children to recognise numerals and understand that each numeral represents a quantity. Through counting activities, number songs and playful exploration, children are developing their ability to link numbers with real‑life examples. Speedwell Nursery School have also been encouraging children to notice numerals in their everyday environment, both inside the nursery school and beyond, helping them understand that numbers play a meaningful role in the world around them. This work aligns strongly with the EYFS, where developing early mathematical awareness is an important foundation for future learning.
In Wren Room, children have been using Tales Toolkit to create and tell their own stories. Through character, setting, problem and solution prompts, they are building an understanding of how stories are structured and learning to express their ideas with increasing independence. These storytelling activities support language development, imaginative play and early literacy skills, with children contributing their own ideas and responding to the key features of stories during shared reading experiences.
Speedwell Nursery School continue to offer engaging opportunities across their early years environment, ensuring children experience hands‑on, meaningful learning that supports their development across the EYFS.
