Little Hayes Nursery School experienced a day of mixed emotions on Friday as they said goodbye to much of their long‑standing willow tree. Although the decision was necessary for safety reasons, with the tree becoming rotten and unstable, the moment also offered a rare learning opportunity for the children.
The children were able to watch the tree surgeons at work and observe the process up close. The team began by throwing ropes and climbing into the nearby oak tree to remove dead wood using chainsaws. They then scaled the willow and carefully removed the limbs. It was a noisy process, but one that the children found exciting and fascinating to watch, offering a memorable real‑world experience that supports the EYFS focus on understanding the natural world.
Although much of the willow had to be taken down, the lower section of the tree has been left in place as a habitat for wildlife. The nursery also now has a collection of logs that will be used around the garden to enrich outdoor play and learning.
