Creative Construction and Sensory Exploration at Rosemary Nursery School

Nov 20, 2025

Rosemary Nursery School children have been engaging in creative construction, sensory exploration and imaginative play this week, supporting their development across the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Class 1 children have been continuing to explore their interest in block play, using a variety of surfaces and materials to support their creativity and problem-solving skills. Inspired by a growing curiosity about the moon, children used both large and small blocks to build imaginative rocket structures, demonstrating their developing understanding of space and shape. Children also engaged in sensory exploration using a range of materials, mixing and blending different textures whilst experimenting freely and enjoying the process of getting messy. These activities support the development of fine motor skills and encourage expressive arts and design.

Class 2 children have been decorating a pumpkin in imaginative ways, using their pincer grip to carefully push matchsticks into the pumpkin’s thick skin, developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Literacy and imaginative play have been a focus, with children enjoying the nursery’s core book Peace at Last, bringing the story’s bear characters to life through role play and deepening their understanding of narrative whilst enhancing their communication and language skills.

Music and movement have played a central role, with children learning about rhythm by tapping along to familiar songs using drums, supporting their expressive arts and design development whilst fostering a sense of timing and coordination. Outdoors, the garden has become a hub of exploration and construction, with children building dens using blocks and large pieces of fabric, experimenting with spatial awareness and problem-solving as they navigate and adapt to small spaces.

Rosemary Nursery School continues to provide a rich and varied early years learning environment where children are encouraged to explore, create and grow through play.
