This month in Children’s Kitchen, Green Room children developed their fine motor skills through chopping, smashing mint and using a lemon juicer whilst creating a delicious mint and cucumber dip. Each of these actions requires precise hand movements and control, building the strength and coordination needed for many everyday tasks including future writing. This hands-on cooking experience also supported children’s growing awareness of nutritious and healthy food choices, helping them understand that fresh ingredients can be combined to create tasty and wholesome snacks. Through cooking, children learn about where food comes from, how to prepare it safely and the importance of eating well whilst developing independence and life skills.
Willow Room children have enjoyed building ramps for cars in the garden. Staff extended this by adding watery powder paint to the guttering, creating exciting marks as cars raced down and away. This combination of physics and art helped children explore movement, speed and colour whilst developing their understanding of cause and effect through hands-on experimentation. The children showed an interest in building boats in the garden, so staff gathered sticks and children made fishing rods with string, transforming their imaginative play into real constructions. This activity developed fine motor skills through knot-tying and threading whilst encouraging problem-solving and creative thinking.
Willow Room has introduced their new core book, “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen, which the children have loved. This classic story with its repetitive language and adventurous narrative engages children through rhythm, movement and anticipation whilst building literacy skills and confidence with storytelling.
The Limes Nursery School looks forward to continuing these engaging cooking, building and storytelling experiences throughout the coming weeks.
