Knowle West Squirrel Room Explores Numbers and Role Play

Feb 27, 2026

Children in Squirrel Room at Knowle West Nursery School have been developing mathematical understanding, imaginative play and physical skills this month through number sequencing, role play, sensory exploration and creative movement.

Squirrel Room has been sequencing and organising numbers, developing early mathematical understanding by exploring number order and relationships whilst building foundations for counting and calculation. The children have been experimenting with role play, taking on different characters and scenarios whilst developing imagination, social skills and understanding of the world through pretend situations.

The children have been joining sensory sessions in the community room, exploring different textures, sounds and materials in a shared space whilst building connections with other children and adults across the nursery. They have also been enjoying dancing in the garden, developing gross motor skills and coordination through movement whilst expressing themselves creatively and having fun outdoors.

These varied experiences show how children learn through multiple approaches, building mathematical thinking, social understanding, sensory awareness and physical development through playful, engaging activities that spark curiosity and joy.
