Planning, Making and Creating: Woodwork Skills in Star Room at Ilminster Avenue

Aug 6, 2026

Children in Star Room at Ilminster Avenue Nursery School have been busy developing their woodwork skills, exploring what it means to plan and make their own models.

Last term, children were introduced to woodwork for the first time. They learnt how to use real tools such as hammers and nails, with a strong focus on safety and how to handle equipment carefully and responsibly. With support, children began to understand how to control their movements and use tools with increasing confidence, building both their physical coordination and their sense of independence. As their confidence grew, children used their ideas to plan and create their own models. They thought about what they wanted to make, selected their materials and worked through problems as they built. This process supported their creativity and critical thinking, as well as their ability to stay focused and see a project through.
