Children across St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School have made a fantastic start to the new term, settling into their rooms, building new friendships and bringing the core book Zoom! by Trish Cooke to life in lots of creative ways.
In Rainbow Room, the team has been welcoming new two-year-olds during their settling-in visits. The water play area and the bikes outdoors have been particularly popular, giving children plenty of chances to investigate and develop their physical skills. Indoors, children have enjoyed mark making and painting at the craft table, as well as imaginative play with babies, building blocks, cars and trains. It has been lovely to see the children becoming more comfortable and happy in their new room.
Orange Room enjoyed its first full week together, with children getting to know one another by sharing their favourite things, likes and dislikes. The story Zoom!, about a brother and sister who do everything in a hurry, sparked lots of conversation, with children acting out actions from the book. A highlight was action painting both indoors and outdoors, as children explored different ways to paint while on the move.
In Yellow Room, children have been making marks just like Hurricane Kieron in the story, painting with brushes, hands, toy cars and even monster trucks, and noticing the patterns and tracks they could create. They also investigated what happens to the water when they wash their painty hands, making predictions about the colour it would turn (a very muddy brown!). Inspired by the playful language in the book, children listened to the sounds of everyday activities like eating, brushing teeth and running, creating their own noisy versions of “Chomp chomp, zoom, zigga zigga zoom!”
These early weeks have been full of confidence, creativity and curiosity, and the team is looking forward to exploring the colours of autumn together next.
