Gardens and Autumn Exploration at St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School

Nov 7, 2025

St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School children have been busy in the garden this week, caring for plants and exploring autumn’s natural treasures through creative activities.

The children have been caring for and watering the herbs and vegetables in the allotment, learning about plant care and developing responsibility for growing things. This hands-on experience connects children with nature whilst supporting their understanding of where food comes from and the care needed to help plants thrive.

Creative expression has flourished across the outdoor spaces. Children have been weaving material and making brilliant marks on the playground, exploring large-scale art whilst developing their fine motor skills through the intricate process of weaving. These activities encourage children to express themselves creatively whilst building the physical skills needed for early writing.

Autumn’s natural materials have inspired sensory exploration. Children have been adding conkers and pinecones into playdough and clay, creating patterns and shapes whilst combining natural autumn materials with malleable resources. This hands-on exploration encourages children to notice the textures and shapes of natural objects whilst experimenting with mark-making and pattern creation, bringing the richness of the autumn season into their creative play.
