Knowle West Nursery School children have been exploring light and dark, settling into new environments and discovering autumn’s treasures this month.
Ladybird and Bumblebee Rooms have been exploring light and dark using torches and lights in the dark den, discovering how light behaves in different spaces whilst building confidence in darker environments. Children used torches with coloured Perspex blocks to explore colour, learning how light can transform and change colours whilst experimenting with cause and effect. The dark den has also become a special space for making friends and playing games, creating unique opportunities for social play and building relationships. The children have been painting pumpkins, hands and boxes, and hammered golf tees into pumpkins, developing hand-eye coordination and building strength through this satisfying physical activity.
Across the other rooms, children have been settling into their new environments and building relationships. Hedgehogs Room has been exploring the outdoor environment with trails, hunts and autumn activities, with “Where’s Bear?” becoming a favourite activity for learning about different garden areas including the bandstand, hills, boat and meadow. Squirrel Room children have been enjoying large sensory play experiences and exploring natural materials in the garden whilst observing seasonal changes. Fox Room has made a wonderful start to the term, with children enjoying the book corner, construction, role play and digging in the sandpit, whilst noticing autumnal resources such as conkers and pine cones.
These diverse experiences across all rooms support children’s development whilst celebrating the changing season and helping every child feel comfortable and happy in their environment.
