AboutBristol Nursery Schools

Bristol has twelve Maintained Nursery Schools, all of which are valued and held in high regard by their communities. Bristol is proud of its long history of Maintained Nursery Schools, some of which have served for the best part of one hundred years!

Nursery schools are a key element of the early years sector within Bristol’s education system, offering exceptional provision, rigour, and accountability in the areas of greatest need across the city.

Nursery Schools are led by a Head Teacher, and the early years provision includes nursery classes led by qualified teachers. This template defines a pedagogical approach delivered through play and learning that drives consistency and high quality.

Many children who enter a Nursery School below age expectations are enabled to catch up and achieve on par with their peers due to the high quality of the Nursery education they receive, which can, in turn, transform their lives and improve their outcomes.

Dedicated teachers lead highly experienced and passionate practitioners to plan learning and progress for all children, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. Long-term research has shown that children who receive an education from a Nursery School are at an advantage.

Nursery Schools work with the ‘whole family’ to find the best ways to meet the needs of each unique child. Early intervention and prevention, and a strong commitment to partnership with other agencies ensure that children and their families are heard, listened to, understood, and supported appropriately.

Each Nursery School is at the heart of its community, putting families and children at the centre of its work. It is passionate about improving the lives of all Bristol’s children, understanding local needs and issues and offering an individualised service where lifelong learning is recognised and valued.

Bristol’s Nursery Schools also contribute to the continuing professional development offer across the city. By sharing training, best practices, and expertise with all Early Years providers and schools, they demonstrate a commitment to driving Early Years education locally, nationally, and even internationally.

The Early Years CPD training offer and all resources can be found on the Bristol Early Years website.
