Digging, Planting and Growing: Term 5 at Cashmore Early Years Centre

May 28, 2026

Term 5 at Cashmore Early Years Centre has been all about planting and growing, with children across all groups throwing themselves into it with real enthusiasm.

The children have been planting beans, peas and cress, watering them carefully and watching them sprout into tall, green stems. They have explored natural materials with magnifying glasses, discovered how worms enrich soil, bees pollinate flowers and snails munch through leaves, and drawn bugs they observed. Garden hunts have uncovered tall trees, purple flowers and garlic shoots, whilst non-fiction books have helped children learn about how plants grow and the variety of plant life around them.

Stories have been woven throughout the term beautifully, with all groups enjoying Jasper’s Beanstalk, Giraffe and Hippo Groups reading Titch, and Tiger and Zebra Groups loving Superworm. The term was topped off with a special visit from Claudia from Children’s Kitchen, who helped plant strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, peas and celery. The children are now busy caring for their plants, eagerly anticipating what grows.

These rich experiences help children develop understanding of the natural world, build scientific thinking through observation, and nurture responsibility as they care for their plants.
