Children in Wren Room at Speedwell Nursery School are exploring growth and change this month through stories, planting activities and personal reflection on how they have grown.
The children are listening to and retelling the story of Jasper’s Beanstalk, helping them understand about caring for plants and realising that they don’t grow instantly. In the garden, the children are noticing signs of spring and growing cress and sunflower seeds, watching carefully to see how plants develop over time. The room is also looking at baby photos with the children to help them notice how they have grown and changed, making personal connections to the theme of growth.
Linked to the activities around growth and change, the children are also reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar, using their counting skills to find out how many items are eaten in the story. The class will be trying lots of different fruits from around the world, connecting the story to real sensory experiences whilst exploring new tastes and textures.
These experiences help children develop understanding of the world as they learn about plant growth and life cycles, build mathematical thinking through counting activities, and make personal connections as they reflect on their own development and change over time.
