This term, Fox Room at Knowle West Nursery School has been full of imagination, gardening adventures and wonderful skill development, with Jack and the Beanstalk inspiring creative play and hands-on learning.
The children have loved the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, pretending to be the giant and stomping around the room with great energy. The story inspired real gardening too — the children grew their own bean plants and everyone took one home. The excitement didn’t stop there. The children also explored The Very Hungry Caterpillar and had the wonderful experience of watching butterflies emerge from their cocoons, bringing the story to life in the most magical way.
Fine motor skills have been developing beautifully this term. During group time, the children have been using scissors with growing confidence and drawing themselves and their families on whiteboards and with pens. They have been exploring a range of tools with playdough and clay, and their drawings and paintings show real development in confidence and skill. Beyond the indoor activities, the children have been developing the allotment and raised garden beds, planting different plants and watching them grow with genuine excitement and anticipation. The hope is that some of these plants will produce vegetables to harvest.
These rich learning experiences support children’s physical development, creativity, imagination and their understanding of the natural world and growth.
