It has been a busy and happy start to the term at Speedwell Nursery School, with the team re-settling returning children, welcoming those moving up from Willow Room, and greeting new children and their families.
Settling in and building relationships has been the focus of these early weeks. Children have been finding out which key groups they are in, whether Purple, Green or Blue, and where they meet. Using visual registers, songs and games, they have been learning the names of the children and adults in their key group. The team is also creating family boards, where children will enjoy sharing their family photos and talking about them. It has been wonderful to see how well the children are settling, exploring the learning environments and finding out where everything belongs.
Stories, rhymes and poems are a big part of learning this term. Children have been revisiting traditional nursery rhymes using books, puppets and props, as well as learning some new ones. The core books this term focus on personal, social and emotional development, exploring feelings, separation, making friends and starting school. With a daily story time, children will be learning to retell stories using story maps and props. To support a love of reading at home, each child will have a book bag and the opportunity to borrow books every Wednesday to share with their families.
As autumn arrives, children have also been exploring the garden and noticing the seasonal changes around them, developing their curiosity about the natural world. With children heading outdoors in all weathers, warm coats, named welly boots and waterproof trousers will all help them make the most of their outdoor learning throughout the coming months.
