Children at St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School have been finding out about their bodies this month, from naming body parts in Yellow Room to marching, hopping and riding new bikes in Rainbow Room.
In Yellow Room, children have been naming different parts of the body and working out where each one goes. They have also talked about how they are feeling and noticed what those feelings do to their bodies, an early step in understanding and talking about emotions. Because so many of the children love superheroes, the team then asked them about their own strengths. Children named what they are good at and found out more about each other’s, which has given their confidence a real boost.
Rainbow Room has been out in the garden exploring colour and trying out the new bikes, pushing themselves along with their legs and getting steadier each time. A sand timer is helping children learn to take turns, showing them when to wait and when it is their go, and they have been patient and kind with their friends. Indoors, action songs have had children marching, hopping, skipping and even walking backwards around the room. Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes has helped them name parts of the body, and The Wheels on the Bus has been a favourite, as part of the room’s song choices for Black History Month.
