Why choose St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School

Historical Educational Legacy
St. Werburgh’s Park Nursery School carries forward a significant educational heritage, having been built in 1931 as an open-air nursery school inspired by the progressive ideals of nursery pioneer Margaret McMillan. This historical foundation informs the nursery’s approach, blending time-tested educational principles with contemporary early years practice. The school has continuously evolved over its nine decades of service, expanding both its physical space and educational offerings while maintaining the core philosophy of providing healthy, nature-connected learning environments for young children. This rich history provides a depth of experience that enhances the educational experience for today’s children.

Centre of Educational Excellence
The nursery’s designation as an Early Years Centre of Excellence in 2012 and its participation in a National Teaching School partnership since 2013 reflect its commitment to outstanding early years education. St. Werburgh’s serves not only its enrolled children but also the broader educational community by offering training and support to other professionals and students. This role as a centre of excellence means the nursery stays at the forefront of early years practice, with staff who continue to develop their expertise and share knowledge with others. The nursery’s structure, with specialised rooms for different age groups, allows for developmentally appropriate experiences tailored to each child’s needs.

Strong Parent Partnerships
St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School places significant emphasis on building meaningful partnerships with parents, recognising them as children’s first and most important educators. The nursery acknowledges that parents know their children best and that their support and encouragement make a substantial difference to learning outcomes. This collaborative approach ensures continuity between home and nursery experiences, strengthening children’s sense of security and enhancing their development. Bristol Children’s Centres offer parenting groups at the nursery, and there is a well-established family support drop-in session for nursery families to attend.
