Bugs, Caterpillars and Clay Paint: A Brilliant Week in Class 2 at Rosemary Nursery School

Jun 5, 2026

Last month, Class 2 at Rosemary Nursery School enjoyed a wonderfully hands-on time, with the allotment, garden and storytelling all bringing brilliant learning opportunities.

A trip to the allotment turned into a wonderful bug hunt, with the children discovering ladybirds, shield bugs, bees, snails and worms. Watching the fascination on their faces as they explored each creature and had conversations about minibeasts and the natural world was truly special. Back inside, the children brought The Very Hungry Caterpillar story to life by making their own caterpillars using pipe cleaners and material, developing fine motor skills whilst enjoying the creative process.

Out in the garden, the children also got stuck into clay paint, using big, sweeping movements to make large marks on a large scale. This kind of physical, expressive mark-making is a fantastic foundation for early writing and a real joy to watch as the children move with confidence and creativity.

These hands-on experiences help children develop curiosity about the natural world, build fine and gross motor skills, and foster a love of creative expression and storytelling.
